Grilled Sweet Potatoes

Heat oils in saucepan. Stir in flour. Whisk 1-2 minutes over low heat. Remove from heat. Add heated liquid and stir briskly until smooth. Return to heat. Add miso. Bring almost to a boil. Turn down to low heat and simmer until thickened. Yields about 1 cup.

Wheat Bread Isn’t Really What You Think

All bread – white or wheat- is made with wheat flour. But is some bread, the flour is refined. These brown breads get their darker color from caramel coloring, not from the type of flour used. By law, any bread that’s labeled whole wheat must be made with 100 percent whole-wheat flour, although the amount used can vary depending on the brand.

Nectarine Halves

This is such a nutritious “stuffed” recipe. It’s a favorite around my house because we always change it. The nectarines can be substituted with other fruits such as, mangoes, apricots or peaches. The nut butters can be substituted with different combinations and the stuffing itself can be diluted with water (adding a little at a time) to make a thick sauce and pour over the fruit halves. It’s a fun recipe to play with for casual to more elegant meals.

Borscht has many forms but is always made with beets. It is sometimes made as a hearty stew that is served hot. This borscht is a light, cold soup which makes a light, refreshing dish to serve on hot days.

Ezekiel Bread

This recipe is pretty time consuming but it is well worth the efforts. It’s an old biblical recipe (hence the name) that’s been around – well, since biblical times. This is one of my favorite recipes that I save for special occasions. For regular occasions – I look for it in the bakery section at the local health food store. Of course you could get the flours already milled but it is quite the treat to not only eat but make this bread as they did in the biblical times (and fun to make with kids!).
