Doing Laundry With Essential Oils

 Using essential oils for laundry is more than just about making clothes smell sweet. They can also help a range of conditions from fatigue to flus. Below are some ways to use essential oils to get through the dreaded laundry task.

When washing a load of laundry in the washing machine, a general rule to follow is to add 3-5 drops of essential oils.

Fragrance All Clothes

Lemongrass

Lavender

or

Ylang-ylang

Colds or Flus

If colds or flus have come into the house wash bed linens and night clothes with:

Eucalyptus

Rosemary

or

Pine

Insomnia

If insomnia is a problem wash bed linens and night clothes with:

Marjoram

Chamomile

or

Orange Blossom

Scents For Clothes

To infuse clothes with certain scents, place 2 drops on a four inch piece of material and tumble dry:

Fresh:

Lavender

Rosemary

Bergamot

or

Pettigraine

Floral:

Geranium

Neroli

Palma rosa

or

Bois de rose

Romantic:

Ylang-ylang

Rose

Jasmine

or

Vervaine

Ironing

Ironing is another way to infuse clothes with essential oils. Add 1 drop to a plant mister and spray as you iron or add 1 drop to a damp towel and place between iron and material being ironed.

Rose – Undergarments (romantic)

Chamomile or Lavender – Bed Clothes (relaxing)

Grapefruit or Basil – Work/School Clothes or exercise clothes (stimulating)

Bergamot – All clothes to help enjoy the chore (anti-depressant)

Aromatherapy In Your Dresser Drawers

Add 1 drop to a cotton ball and place in your dresser drawers:

Rose – Undergarments (romantic)

Chamomile or Lavender – Bed Clothes (relaxing)

Grapefruit or Basil – Work/School Clothes or exercise clothes (stimulating)

Lemon, Lavender, and Rosemary – Socks/shoes (antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, antiseptic)

Deep Clean Your Kitchen Towels

Your dish towels don’t smell, the microbes on them smell. Add 1 drop of any of the following essential oils to a bowl of boiling water and leave them to soak before washing in the machine as normal:

Eucalyptus

Thyme

Tea Tree

or

Lavender

Natural Laundry Soap

This recipe is not only easy to make, it’s also inexpensive as compared to name brand laundry soap and it’s good for the environment.

10 drops grapefruit essential oil

10 drops lavender essential oil

1 cup baking soda

1 cup borax

1 cup powdered castile soap

Add the essential oils to the baking soda drop by drop, mixing thoroughly with a hand sifter. Combine this with the borax and soap, and mix again. Store in a tightly covered container. To use the soap, add one-half cup to each load of laundry.

If you’d like, make a few batches and store.

Protection Against Moths

Add a few drops of cedar or eucalyptus essential oil to the final rinse water then washing sweaters or other clothing and allow them to soak for about 30 minutes.
