When someone tells me they want to start using essential oils, I always give them my “List of 10”
These are the most versatile and useful essential oils for the average home. Now a days you can find most of these essential oils in supermarkets and they most definitely can be found in health food stores.
List of 10
Lavender
Tea Tree
Peppermint
Chamomile
Eucalyptus
Geranium
Rosemary
Thyme
Lemon
Clove
If you’d like to use the essential oils properly then add aloe vera, witch hazel, and a base oil to the list.
Base Oils: My favorite 2 base oils are Sweet Almond oil and Grapeseed Oil. They are my favorites because they don’t need anything added to them before use. Essential oils are too highly concentrated to be used directly on the skin and you’ll need the base oil to dilute the essential oils. Sweet Almond Oil and Grapeseed Oil are also easy to find now a days. If they’re not at your supermarket they will for sure be at the health food store. Other base oils include: Evening Primrose Oil, Jojoba Oil, Olive Oil, Safflower Oil, Sesame Oil, and Sunflower Oil. There are other base oils as well, but I’ve listed the most commonly found oils and ones that I have used.
Essential oils are used in certain methods of treatments. They can be mixed with base oils, used as a compress, applied neat (straight to the skin or cotton pad), and dripped in hot water for steam inhalations or for soaks in a bath.
